HIV/AIDS Awareness Club

The HIV/AIDS awareness club addresses issues facing teenagers.

It aims to teach youth the following:

bulletHow to  prevent HIV by using a condom and/or abstaining from sexual intercourse
bulletHow to live positively with HIV and how to care for those who are HIV positive
bulletHow HIV is transmitted
bulletHow to love and respect themselves
bulletThe dangers of alcohol and drug use
bulletContraception and HIV prevention

Methods

Transmission

Different pictures depicting different situations are shown and participants are asked to mark every picture according to the level of risk they perceive in that situation.  Coloured paper is used to represent different levels of risk (green-no risk, yellow-low risk and red-high risk.)  Real and perceived risk levels are then reviewed by the group.

Contraceptive choices

Participants are asked to match contraceptive method cards with cards explaining each contraceptive method.  This is followed by a review of all available contraception and an explanation as to which methods can prevent HIV transmission.  Abstinence is also discussed.

Body language

In this exercise, participants are divided into two groups.  Each group picks a card showing an HIV related picture and must mime what is on the card.  The other group must guess what picture is on the card.  This exercise teaches awareness of body language and non-verbal communication.

Living with HIV/AIDS

During this part of the programme participants are asked to think of what it means to be HIV positive.  They are shown a picture of someone who seemingly has just been diagnosed HIV positive  and are asked to explain what brought the person in the picture to be tested and where they are headed.  This teaches participants to look at HIV in broader terms.

Love, respect, sexuality and protection

This is a wheel of fortune game.  On the wheel there are four colours representing: love, respect, sexuality and protection.  The wheel is rolled by each participant and a corresponding question is asked.

Drama

An HIV drama is acted out by participants.  This drama has been specifically written to address issues facing Namibian youth.

The HIV/AIDS awareness club is continuing to hold regular meeting at the centre and is facilitated by our administrative assistant, Helvi Hilukilwa.
