New Start Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre
On April 11, 2005 the DRC School Project & Community Centre, in partnership with the Social Marketing Association, opened the doors to a New Start Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre in Swakopmund. The New Start centre provides HIV testing and pre and post test counselling to the Swakopmund community. The centre is situated in Mondesa and employs three staff members, a Nurse/Counsellor a Counsellor and a Receptionist. The centre is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00. The centre will be expanding in August 2006 to make room for two additional counsellors. Over the last year we have experienced an increasing demand for VCT services in Swakopmund. We are hoping to better address this demand by expanding and increasing the number of available trained counsellors. In the future we will be opening a counselling and testing office at one of the Ministry of Health and Social Services' clinics here in Swakopmund, the Tamariskia Clinic. We hope these changes will improve our service by helping to reach a larger segment of the community. Over 1,500 clients have been tested at the centre since it opened its doors. |
